I need to tell about my latest discovery, Soap Nuts, they are actually the berries of a tree that grows in Nepal and India. They grow sustainable trees that produce nuts for 90 years. They also provide a trade for the farmers in these developing countries. They are 100% natural and do not harm the environment, skin or your clothes, unlike washing powders do not contain bleach. They are gentle but effective cleansers suitable for sensitive skin and eczema.

They can be used for washing anything that is washable,

Laundry: Place 6-8 nuts in a laundry bag, place in the drum of the washing machine, no powder or fabric conditioner required. As the nuts are odourless 3-4 drops of essential oils can be added if required. The soap nuts can be used 3-4 times depending on water temperature. It is advisable to wash heavier soiled items in the first batch as they release more soap on the first wash. You can add Bicarbonate of soda for heavily soiled washes, although I've not needed to do this as yet.

Making Liquid Soap: After using in washing machine, or you can use unused nuts, boil soap nuts for 5 mins and strain, you now have a all purpose cleaner that can be used for household cleaning, hands, hair, dishes, floors and an insecticide for pets or plants.

Essential oils can also be added to this as required, lemon is popular for kitchens, tea tree for floors and work surfaces as it is antibacterial, white vinegar for windows, or add your favourite fragrance to leave your house smelling gorgous. 250g bag is enough for 30- 40 washes and costs £3.80
500g bag is enough for 60-80 washes and costs £6.80

Average cost per wash 8p plus you have your liquid cleaner.

I've even convinced my Mum who is very impressed on how white my son's collars are on his school shirts.
